Scott Flanders, MD, HMS Program Director, presented a plenary talk at the 2013 Society of General Internal Medicine Annual Meeting on April 25, 2013, in Denver, Colorado. The talk was entitled, "The Association Between Hospital Performance for Pharmacologic Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis and Rates of Venous Thromboembolism." The conclusion presented was that hospital level of performance for pharmacologic VTE prophylaxis in medical patients does not appear to be associated with in-hospital or 90 day rates of VTE. The impact of increasing rates of pharmacologic prophylaxis to prevent hospital associated VTE in general medical patients imay be minimal.
